The mission of Brookwood Community Farm is to reclaim and restore underutilized farmland for agricultural purposes, while maintaining and cultivating the ecological richness and diversity of Brookwood Farm. The farm will involve local communities in educational programs with direct, hands-on participation in farming, research and conservation activities. This project will benefit city-dwellers and suburbanites through increased access to locally grown, organic produce, a deeper understanding of the role agriculture plays to enhance local communities, and awareness of the native flora and fauna inhabiting natural field and second growth ecosystems. Key elements of this sustainable working farm include: an organic Community Supported Agriculture program (weekly harvest shares to member households during the growing season), educational programs for students and members of the community, environmental research projects, and on-site and virtual nature trails and information. These activities will be balanced by efforts to maintain a large portion of the land as wild open space where tall grasses provide habitat for diverse populations of insect, bird, mammal, plant and other classes of biota. Thus, the visiting public can enjoy nature alongside an organic farm, and see the symbiotic relationship between the two.
