Cathy Smith

President, Food Access, Events

A member of BCF since 2007, she joined the board in 2008 and became president in late 2017.  A Milton resident, Cathy has 3 children and a supportive spouse.  Her concern for the source of food comes from farm work as a young adult and from raising her children along with her love of the outdoors.  The driving force behind Cathy's work is the sustainability of Brookwood Community Farm.

Secretary, The Ride for Food

Robert has been a member of Brookwood Community Farm for over 10 years and has served on the Board of Directors since 2018. In addition to helping out around the farm, he organizes the farm’s participation in The Ride for Food which is a significant source of fundraising for the farm.  He lives in Milton resident and father of three wonderful daughters.  Robert is a physicist who  dabbles in cycling, making sawdust, baking and occasionally feeding malt to yeast.

Kris Hewes

Education/Volunteerism

Kris Hewes has been an organic gardener since her first garden in Randolph back in the mid 70's. Moved to Milton in the early 1980's and has lived in town ever since. Right out of college she got a job at MIT and worked in the same division for over 40 years. Since retirement became a member of BCF and for this season she's been busy keeping the weeds out of the herb garden. Kris became a board member in September 2020 and is looking forward to learning more about the Brookwood community.

Latrice joined the board in 2021. She lives in Milton with her husband and four children. Owing to her love of food, people and social justice, she studied nutrition, genetics and public health. She is a scientist and clinical geneticist focused on equity-based research. She loves gardening, hiking, creating new recipes and movie night with the family.


ALYSSA MELENDEZ

Alyssa was born and raised in Milton and currently lives in Dorchester. She first became involved at Brookwood when she worked as a field crew member during the summers of 2018 and 2019, while she pursued a M.S. in Agriculture, Food, and Environment (AFE) at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Working at Brookwood allowed her to put her passion for sustainable agriculture into action. After working at Brookwood she continued to serve as a BCF member, volunteer at the Roslindale Farmers Market, and was excited to join the board in 2024. She is now the Operations and Supply Chain Manager for a single-origin spice company called Burlap & Barrel, where she continues to work directly with small farmers around the world. She loves to travel every chance she gets, especially to taste new flavors. In her free time you can find her cooking, gardening, hiking with her energetic cattle dog (Zahra) and spending time with family and friends

Ben krupicka

(he/him)

Ben moved to Milton with his wife and young son in 2020 and immediately became a Brookwood member, having previously experienced the joys of community-supported agriculture at various farms in California, New York and Massachusetts. Ben joined the Board in 2023 in order to leverage his experience in community relations and grant writing in support of Brookwood’s efforts to expand local food access and environmental education. An Oregon native, he continues to spend much of his free time enjoying the great outdoors.

Rob shepard

(he/him)

Rob has lived in Milton for 30 years and is assuming the role of BCF’s Treasurer in 2024.  He has served in similar Treasurer roles for other non-profit organizations in the past and was attracted to BCF by the mission it serves and its associated people.  He enjoys reading and some form of daily exercise which includes hiking with his wife and dog in the Blue Hills during the weekends.

Stephen Popkin

(he/him)

Steve has been a member of Brookwood since 2007, and his family has been coming to and supporting farm activities ever since. His son Bowen transformed a former learning garden into the farm’s current herb garden in 2019 as his Eagle Scout project. Steve enjoys cooking, gardening, and tinkering. He is the head of research and technology at a federal lab and hopes to bring that mindset to the farm and BCF as it continues to evolve and develop for the betterment of the communities it touches.
